#12 Conclusions and review

I enjoyed the content of the Learning 2.0 program.  The only hitch was fitting it in with other duties.
I suppose also that I feel that there are are so many interesting tools available that I wont get to use as many of them as I could (should?).
Professionally I think the concept of our patrons being able to interact more with online material (eg by adding tags, or using RSS feeds) etc or resources (eg chat, dowloading/uploading images etc) - for example - is a positive element of the whole 2.0 revolution.

I think the this programme is a good start for us to get a grip on what's going on out there, but personally I think I need to remember to more actively track what's happening with the continuing flow of  new developments.

As an industry libraries have been at the forefront of utilising new technological developments, but now there's a whole new set of players out there (eg the behemoth: Google everywhere!) and we need to continue, and increase, our concerted effort be out there (not following).  For example I'm looking forward to seeing SLV's new website in 2010.  I hope there'll be a lot of 2.0 tools (widgets) going on there to take Us out to the virtual searcher, as well as them being brought in.

Goodnight and good luck!
Bye from Audrey too:

#11 More Web 2.0 Applications & Library 2.0

Popped into some of the winners and runner up sites. I liked Yufind; very easy to navigate. Reminded me of Primo in it's structure and layout.

Urban spoon is also available on itunes for ipod download. It's a bit of fun on that media; on one of the options available (if you can't decide where to go, and a version of "sticking a pin in the map"!) you shake the ipod and the different restaurant options spin round as if on a poker machine and then randomly land on one! Amusing:

Tried Parking search too.  Wish we had it for Melbourne.  I use Google maps a lot (as I think a lot of people do).  I've used street view for a couple of slv enquiries also.  eg to find a laneway location.  I have even used it on my mobile phone when I've needed directions.  Maybe I should get a satnav?

#10 Yet more Audrey ! You tubed and dangerous....

Had a look at a range of You Tube things, some entertaining and some more serious (often both).  I really liked the Science Hack ones also.  I think this tool is wonderful  (apart from the recreational features) for the self-educational opportunities it offers.  Also potential for "ordinary" people to have a creative oulet.

Professionally I think SLV could utilise a lot of videos embedded at various points in our web page where we could provide advise on eg searching the catalogue, or how to use a database (or what is a database!).  Also some of the subject pages could utilise videos.

Will try and include one here - within my usual theme of Audrey H!  Hope it works:

Didn't work first time; think it did now....Phew!!!

#9 Almost given the Flickr!

I added a pic to Flickr from my phone; I enabled Flickr too blogger; I roamed (unarmed and undangerous) around the Flickr environs; and I visited a few groups...

But had several glitches in aiming to do some of the exercises, eg I initially couldn't get this photo of Audrey to be blogged following the instructions in Flickr; but found it in the end.

Of course I had to pick this image, given my chosen Avatar! Purely aspirational you understand (i'm not deluding myself!)

Also uploaded the Flickr downloading software.  Input time doesn't yet equate with output value, but maybe I've now overcome a few of the technical hurdles I'll find it more useful in the future?

#7 Tags and del.icio.us And #8 Library Thing

I have no philosophical objection to tags (given their usual freeform nature)...perhaps I should - as a librarian?  I think in most contexts it works well when they are there in conjunction with more formalised, or "official",  ones.  I guess that's having a bet each way!

I noted that the ABC appeared to be the assigners on their webpages (ie rather than opening this up to the public -although of course listeners/viewers can comment in other ways to the site).  What does this apparent caution indicate?  I will be interested to see what the facility of tagging on our new Search catalogue will reveal.  Not scared, just interested!

I had started accessing del.icio.us a while ago (God it's hard, and annoying, to type that word...have to think about it every time!).  I think I haven't really utilised it as I could, or perhaps should have; it really is quite useful. For example on the Chat services, Ask Now and SLVchat.  But I haven't got into the habit of looking at it and remembering to add to it all the interesting sites I come across. I wonder about the social networking angle too.  I haven't explored that in "real life" yet. ie other than reading about it as part of this exercise.

But as an indication of my intentions at least:  I've just downloaded the del.icio.us add-on from Firefox to my imac at home.  We'll see...

Created a Library thing accnt, but will need to go home to add any more titles of my own!  I did actually once recommend this for someone wanting to do some amateur "cataloguing" for a small collection they had in an organisation.  Were wanting to be able to search, keep track of, and lend items.  I would have been interested to know if they'd found it useful.  I think theoretically it serves the purposes they were mentioning.

#6 Podcasts

Luckily I've already had a bit of a go of this.  I'm a great radio fan, and I'd wanted for ages to be able to subscribe to the podcasts which are available, particularly from the ABC.  I've finally acquired an ipod and have had my first go of downloading some (would you believe it's one with these 3 "geeks" [self-labeled!] talking about latest developments in Google!!!)

There's so many things available, again.  But, once again, the beauty and the terror of the 2.0 world is that anyone can put stuff up, so you have to try a few, and avoid the rubbish!  But generally, I'm a fan!

#5 RSS

Well, half in half....I had already subscribed to some Google Reader things in our last foray into 2.0 territory.  But I decided to have another look and refresh my memory...and I guess that partly answers some of the questions raised here:  Theoretically I think this is a useful tool, and well designed (it seems to have added some extra features since I last visited)...But, did I utilise it? No (I'm afraid); I think we have so many things to keep abreast of that it fell off my radar.  Maybe I should establish it as a particular routine to make sure I look at it, say once a week (or whatever)?

This is of course assuming that I actually subscribe to things which are worthwhile.  On my revisit I did add a couple of extras, including the ABC 774 twitter feed (just to see what it looked like).

I think the answer is also to make judicious selections also.  In terms of my work it might be useful to have a feed to keep up to date with selection subject areas.  I need to think about this.

#4 Zoho'd Again!!

Well, that was interesting, I think.  I submitted the prev post via Zoho, but it cut out half of each line.  Might have been to do with me putting it in a box/table in Zoho...(Don't ask!).  So I guess it half worked.  Oh well, here's the whole thing:

Luckily for me, I think!, I had already created a Zoho account.  I've also tried out Google Docs.  I regularly recommend one of them when I'm on the desk and someone needs word processing.  Some people are a bit put off (seems like too much trouble), but, if I have time, I log on as me and demonstrate, and then some people have been encouraged to give it a go.

I havent done anything fancy myself with these tools yet (altho I'm typing this post on Zoho now!).  But my experience was enough such that when I finally bought a computer (an Imac) I decided not to buy a Word or Office package, at least for the time being, but to use one of the ones freely available.  I've been told Open Office is meant to be good also, but I haven't got around to trying it yet.

#WK3 (#WK2) So she was cut to the Wik(i)!

Already felt a bit Wiki'd out with my toing and froing over whether to use a wiki or a blog for the new Digital Digest@SLV. Chose a wiki in the end, but still unsure.  A small group of staff are doing some beta testing of it (ie adding stuff!) to see what we think. If you'd like to join in just let me know.

So I put my two bits worth onto the SLV practice wiki.  Decided to add a page with a bit of info on good quality medical websites.  Be nice if someone actually found this useful, although that's not the purpose of this particular exercise I guess.

I'm a fan of Wikipedia (and I really like that particular wiki software) and certainly it's evident how useful they are.  One of the issues I had (mainly over the Digital Digest) was over how to make it readily accessible to people, but without it being totally open.

WK ???? Embarrassing Hiatus

After an excruciating absence due to being swamped....(Ironically enough it was another task of Library 2.0 character that nearly did me in; having to create a new Digital Digest and wrestling over appropriate software - but more on this later...)

So, this post is to do a mea culpa and then get on with these tasks (but triple time!)

# Wk 1 Fear and Trembling (not loathing?)

Well, after all that....I'd been going to use my last years embryonic (but still-born) blog (blogette?). I even still had my login details. But I couldn't help feeling the need to start afresh to ensure I remembered the essential things. But I'd better accelerate to catch up with everyone...
Pressure to make amends for last year. ie get to the end.
